Neurodiversity and Project-Based Learning
In community-based makerspaces and Fab Labs, children and adults are engaged in hands-on activities, working together to complete unique projects. How can inclusively designed environments, where learners pursue interest-driven projects in connection with peers and mentors, tap the strengths of neurodiverse learners?
This question was posed at the third webinar of the Neurodiversity Potential Research Group (NeuPoteKen), held on August 26, 2025 (August 27, Japan time). It was moderated by Rua Williams from the User Experience Design program at Purdue University. The speakers were Kylie Peppler, an educator/designer and professor at the University of California, Irvine, and one of the leaders of the Connected Learning Lab, and Youka Watanabe, who established FabLab Kamakura in 2012, the first FabLab in East Asia.
