Neurodiversity Inclusion in Higher Education

In Japan, the provision of reasonable accommodations became mandatory on April 1, 2024. At the same time, higher education institutions around the world are increasingly recognizing the importance of going beyond “mere reasonable accommodations” to truly include neurodiversity. As we seek to implement support for neurodivergent students, faculty, and staff, what kinds of initiatives are actually required in educational settings?

These were the questions explored at the 5th webinar of the Neurodiversity Potential Study Group (NeuPoteKen), held on October 28, 2025 (October 29 in Japan). The webinar welcomed as guest speakers Erik Brenner, Director of the Neurodiversity Initiative at Northeastern University, and Joi Ito, President of Chiba Institute of Technology and a leader in advancing neurodiversity inclusion.
